Are You An Expert?

June 29, 2010 · Print This Article

Thom left a comment on the last post about being an expert and just in case you didn’t see it or my answer, I’m posting it here:

“I think one thing that people don’t realise is that everyone is an expert at something. For you, it’s PLR.

Most importantly, it doesn’t haven’t to be something relating to online marketing. There’s no reason why, if you’re great in the kitchen, that can’t be your expertise angle (feeding a family with healthy food whilst working full time, for example). It’s really a case of finding something that you do, something that you’re passionate about, or something that you’re just good at.

I’d go further, and say everyone reading this is a real expert in at least five things and could put out information products on them pretty quickly. Anyone disagree?”

My response:

“And I agree with you that everyone is an expert in at least 5 things.  Upon reflection some of mine are:

 Writing articles/PLR
Helping kids learn with everyday activities
Making up dishes with only ingredients I have on hand (because I hate grocery shopping)
 Doing research
 Quilting

Of course there are varying degrees of expertness! ”

I say you’re an expert to someone else if you know more than they do about a subject.  You might not think you know very much about something until you start talking to or teaching someone who knows absolutely nothing about the subject.  I think some people get hung up on the term “expert” because they feel they have to know absolutely everything.

How about you?  I’d like to see your list of 5 things you’re an expert at!
And if you’d like, we could explore what you could do with any of them online.

5 things I am expert at? I believe I can answer that.

#1…I can write about almost anything and, as a ghostwriter, I have. Some topics none of you would believe, but my lips are sealed.

#2…I see possibilities where most see problems. I saw one watching CNN news this morning and it is on my To Do list, which gets longer every day…sigh.

#3…I love digital photography and spend a lot of time outside in the weather, good or bad, photographing clouds, sunrises and sunsets, flowers, whatever catches my eye. A website for those photos is on my To Do list…another sigh.

#4…I love to create things… earrings, miniature gardens (I call them Fairy Gardens) and anything else that is pretty and useful. If I see it, I can usually recreate it if I want to.

#5…I have great friends and business partners. Sometimes those categories intermingle to my delight. I am pretty good at being a friend…I can care for my friends, love them, work with them and let them lead their own lives. It’s a two-way relationship that is very stable.

Some would feed me if I was hungry, tell me when I was just wrong and several who would bail me out of jail, if necessary, and most of them would be sitting beside me in jail, laughing. Works for me and them.

    Gosh, Peggy, 5 things…which 5 should I pick?? No, I mean, can I find 5…sorry, flippancy over now…

    1. Dog owner (I am being serious now)
    2. Positive encouragement
    3. Decision making
    4. Writing
    5. Business owner

Great question, really made me think, and also made me think about what things are important in my list.

    Enjoy the journey.

    Five things, hmmm

I’m an expert on animals, because I’m a vet.

    I’m a writer.

I’m a motivator I have four friends I have encouraged to start running and they’re all now entering fun runs and losing weight and getting fit.

I’m an ideas person. If I could grab all my ideas and turn them into reality, I’d be rich and famous. Instead, I’m neither, lol.

I think I’m a pretty good wife and mother. Well, there have been no complaints.

Peggy, I admire anyone who can make a meal from what’s in the cupboard. I’m so culinary challenged and I hate cooking. Maybe I’m not such a great wife after all!!

    Hi Nora,
Wow, it looks like you are a specialized expert! I always thought conflict resolution sounded interesting.

    Pat,
You continue to crack me up. Bail you out of jail? lol. I’m looking forward to see your results when you cross your photography with internet marketing.

    David,
I like your areas of expertise! You are an out-and-out coach for sure.

    Hey Mandy,
I’m glad you had more than 5 things to choose from. ;) With the businesses you’ve owned, I bet you can teach people a thing or two.

    Hi Audrey,
Add funny to your list. :) Being a vet is definitely an expertise. How have you used your knowledge online to create an income stream?

Mandy’s list reminded me I’m also an “expert” in the petsitting business. I do plan to turn that knowledge into an ebook or physical book some day. When I first came online I dismissed the idea because there is already an excellent petsitting book out there. But now I know that there can be more than one expert and I just need to put my own spin on it. Right?

Peggy…You will be the first one to know when I cross my photos with
Internet marketing. When? Let’s see…Got a membership site in the
“working on it like crazy” stage…resurrecting my recipe site (got the WP theme)…thinking about providing solutions for those dealing with
financial crisis…a partner in a mentoring project that is supposed to
launch around the same time as my membership site…ghostwriting for clients all the time…another project due to start in July sometime…laundry that needs washing…

I just hope I can get to the end of that list before it grows much larger.

  8. Pat Graham on July 2nd, 2010 8:34 am

I’ve decided not to do the laundry. That should help clear up my long To Do list.

    Pat,
Having clean laundry is over-rated anyway. lol
Do the rest… it will keep your mind young.

Peggy, thanks very much for promoting my comment to a full post.

I agree completely with you that, if you can teach someone else, you’re an expert.

I’ll throw out five expert skills of mine off the top of my head:

    1. Travelling around the UK at a substantial discount.
    2. Installing, configuring and debugging web scripts.
    3. Mathematically correct strategies in online poker.
    4. Effectively researching information online.
    5. Improving any digital photo in post production.
(and that’s without getting into anything I do as part of my day job, or too far into Internet Marketing).

I’d like to think that I could teach any of those subjects with minimal preparation, either on an individual basis, or as a webinar class – which is what being an expert is really about.

    Hi Thom,
Good expert skill sets! Thanks for sounding off. You come across as very confident in what you know and what you can do with it.

    Thanks,
    Peggy
